I've been to the vintage days at Barber and would love to hit Mid Ohio. The vintage races are great but the people, bikes and swap meets at these events are what make them.

+1 on that, but...

The ride from Illinois, through Indiana, then through Ohio is numbingly boring, almost a "near death" experience.

If anyone knows of an "exciting" route through Indy and Ohio, please advise, but to my current knowledge... nada.

Maybe on a bigger bike than my Bonneville, some type of long-range tourer with a comfy seat and a stereo! But again, it might be a bore. I've done this in a cage, and you absolutely fight to stay awake on the long, endless, site-less slabs of straight concrete. Efficient for Truck Drivers - Yes! But no one thought of maintaining the interest of the majority user, or keeping them safe and awake. There must be some good backroads, but then it might take forever to get there. Hmm.

This would be a great "road trip" excuse, with 3 or 4 guys in a cage, taking turns driving.

Ride Safe (and awake)!

Yup, there are many hours of super slab between here and Mid Ohio, and in July. Vintage Days in Birmingham are in October, but the cooler weather makes the long drone only slightly more bearable.

Actually, I could take US Route 30, also known as the historic “Lincoln Highway” about 98% of the way.

http://www.lincolnhighwayassoc.org/

That could be interesting, as it avoids any toll roads, and meanders through small towns all the way. This was once a major highway, much like old Route 66, until the advent of the superslabs and boring, but efficient, series of cross-state Tollways.

Lot’s of funkly old motels, diners, old filling stations, small town Main Streets, etc. Granted, it would add roughly about a hour and a quarter to the trip (for me… a total of 7.1 Hours one way), but arguably worth it. I usually beat the Mapquest stated times by about 15% anyway.

Seems like the Lincoln Highway Association works very hard to preserve the heritage, which is very noble. Hat’s off to ‘em!

Ride Safe!
