The thought of a cross-brand scenario is something that hasn't been successfully implemented. This site is an example of such an attempt, and I can't say that it's been a resounding success so far, but I'm still trying.
Dirty old fart. I don't want to party. I want to play 'doctor'

Being independent has it's price. It's the 'lawnmower' attitude.....

Last minute note: Yesterday, I called a local Harley Dealer to see if I could get my Triumph Dyno'd - I've done a few minor tweaks this winter - They were listed in the "Dynajet" dyno locater.

Answer - "Nah, we only work on Harleys". Guess they don't need the business!
Be patient. You'll be able to buy a Dynojet motorcycle dyno from them at the auction...for yourself.

I'm thinking that Warren bought HD just to have something 'unique'n his portfiolo

Not to hijack the thread, but anyway...

This "Dyno" subject is very frustrating. I've done a few "mad scientist" mods on my bike this winter, and just want to establish a new baseline.

Made six (6) calls the past 2 days, and here are some actual quotes from these calls:

"Triumph? Who makes those?" (click)

"Sorry man... we only work on Harleys". (click)

" We don't have anything to check the A/F ratio... why do you need to know that?" (click)

"Keihin Carburetors? Are those Fuel injected?" (click)

" Cost? Well... $150 each for the Dyno runs, and we always do three. $85.00 an hour to adjust the carbs, and we fiqure about 4 hours on that..." That's $790.00, plus whatever parts we use..." (click)

" Yeah, I think we have a dyno out back... pretty sure... we haven't used in in a while... Triumph? Never heard of.." (click)

So...

1.) These were ALL on the Dynojet locator list. Screw those lists from now on. Proof once again that merely buying a machine or a technology does not automatically guarantee knowledge.

2.) Seems like a LOT of amatuers are out there butchering up bikes.

3.) Sometimes I feel like I have "Fool" tattooed on my forehead (but they wouldn't see that over the phone).

4.) I don't think I'll waste time - and money - having her Dyno'd. I don't want to encourage these psuedo- mechanics. In the end, who cares anyway. I KNOW the improvements worked, I can feel it.

5.) Reason number 5347 why you should always wrench your own bike, and never let anyone else touch it. Sorry.

Lastly, maybe I WILL find a secondhand Dyno somewhere. Could be fun!

I'm taking the bike over to my "Triumph" only dealer. Called him late yesterday. Great guy, wise, experienced, thorough and un-opinionated. He wrenches on Triumph's only, and has been for 30+ years. I let him take her for a spin just for the heck of it, and he gives me honest and straight-forward feedback.

Better than a Dyno, sez me.

Re: Warren Buffet in on HOG

we'll continue on this tangent....

The "butt Dyno" is probably the best indicator, either that or find someone with a stock Bonnie and drag race them, numerous times. That's what I did as I modded my T100. Every time I changed something, first I consulted my 'butt dyno' and then I drag raced a friend with a stocker. Real time is always better than dyno time anyway and cheaper so long as you do it out in the coun try and don't get caught.......'But Mr. Officer, I was just checking my mid range response, I just re-jetted.....

I really modded my T100. Drilled the slides, shimmed the needles, changed the mains and bored and polished the bodies. I finally opted out of the stock Kehins and installed a set of CR's. If I had it to do again, I'd probably get rid of the Kehin's altogether and install a Webber DCOE40mm twin throat with a custom manifold. Probably the biggest seat of the pants gain came from porting and polishing the head and installing aftermarket high lift cams. That really woke up the twin, especially in mid range, where I need the power to pull the chair around.

One thing you need to keep in mind is that engines are suck and blow so if you suck it in, you have to blow it out. It's easy to fiddle with the suck end but you are limited somewhat on the blow end.

One thing I did was retain the stock air box and snorkel for a couple of reasons. One, I don't want the intake howl. That sound went out with the 60's. I'm not impressed by the 'Hoover' sound anyway. The stock air box with a K&N or a Uni, will flow more CFM's than the bike is capable of utilizing with any normally aspirated setup anyway. I don't want to worry about water ingestion either and I want my air filtered. Lots of airborne grit out there just waiting to polish my bores...not. I know Selman and Smith sell a fancy air box replacement and I guess if you have that much pocket change and you want to look cool, you can go that route. me. I'll pass.

On the blow end, I got rid of the stock exhaust system...entirely. Matter of fact, I sold everything on Flea-Bay. I replaced the OEM head pipes with a set of seamless steel mandrel bent head pipes and had them plasma coated, inside and outside for better flow, no discoloration and I got rid of the crossover. You don't need unwanted exhaust pulses screwing up the scavenging effect of the header itself. That brings me to the length of my head pipes and the dyno. My head pipes were designed on the dyno for optimum length, to allow the exhaust charge to slightly overlap the valve timing to pull as much of the spent gas from the cylinder as possible as the valve closes. That way, I don't need or desire any baffling in the mufflers and the length of the mufflers is tuned for exhaust pulse as well. I utilized OEM Meriden 1968 vintage peashooters with no baffles. I like it frigging loud. After all, it's a show bike.

If, you stand behind the bike when it idles and the exhaust system is cold and blowing condensation, it will blow 'smoke rings' as the exhaust pulses exit the mufflers.
