Some Thoughts on Christmas...

This year, as we shop for Christmas gifts, and actually as we shop for anything, think about this:

Look for "Made In USA". Every time we purchase goods made in the USA, we are helping our fellow citizens, and we are also helping ourselves in these difficult economic times.

US Corporations will not be hiring people back, or adding to staff until the demand in goods calls for it. Every time we purchase items "Made In China", we are strengthening their economy, and weakening ours.

In one of the greatest historical blunders of all time -just after World War II, and up until the late 60's early 70's, we (the United States) poured millions and millions of dollars into aid for "poor" China. Those of us raised in the '50's will clearly remember our mothers telling us how everyone in China was starving, and that said, we shouldn't be wasting food.

Now, China is practically keeping the USA afloat with loans, etc. How embarrassing, but it is clearly a result of the greed displayed by so many USA manufacturers in shifting manufacturing operations to China, under the false guise of "survival", vs. the reality of "massive profit".

Buy "Made In USA" products as much as possible if you can. Get our folks back to work. Yes, they may cost a bit more now, but consider it an investment in our future.

Otherwise, start learning to speak Chinese, so you can communicate with our new masters.

Merry Christmas,

Bob

Good post, Bob. But ...our "new masters" won't even expect you to communicate with them. They'll handle that communication bit all by themselves. Hence Jaguar IS an Indian company. Hence Benelli IS an Asian or Malaysian (whatever) company

Re: Some Thoughts on Christmas...

I'm on-board, but am struggling with what American-made alternatives are available?
  • My wife wants an electronic gadget that will likely be at least packaged overseas.
  • My boy's toys have already been taken care of, but who makes toys here in the US any longer?
  • I'm thinking about making a trek to Kansas City to look at motorcycle apparel items as gifts, but all of the mainstream brands are manufactured out the US
Help!

Re: Some Thoughts on Christmas...

Trying to HELP:

American (mostly but not only Californian) wines... American food (Maine lobsters and clam chowders, Virginian ham, Alaskan king crab legs,Texican steaks...)... American booze (Bourbon, Brandy)...

OK, they are all consumables and thus shortlived. But shortlived are likely to be the imported electronic gadgetry and toys you refer to. And shortlived is the X'Mas celebration itself, isn' it?

ENJOY!

Re: Some Thoughts on Christmas...

This might help, and if you "google" "Made in USA", you can get some other info.

Still Made in USA.com - American-Made Products for Home and Family

Books are always good gifts... hopefully educational as well!. Look inside the cover for "Printed in USA".

To Moto's quote " I'm thinking about making a trek to Kansas City to look at motorcycle apparel items as gifts, but all of the mainstream brands are manufactured out the US "

I hear what you're sayin'. Years ago I purchased an expensive "British Motorcycle Gear", Belstaff Jacket.... inside labeled - Made in Pakistan!!!!

Sometimes ya' can't win.

Ride (and buy) Safe!

Nowadays, "Made in Pakistan" might aptly denote any derilict industrial suburb of London, Coventry, Liverpool, Birmingham, Leicester...
