For certain, much of what the ol' "Motor Company" has been up to lately generates some very heavy head scratching, and potentially harmful rolling of the eyes.
Plus, in this "new age" bizniz werld, you can be at the helm when your "company" loses a hefty $218 million, apparently shift the blame to something or someone else, and then collect an incomprehensibly imbalanced bonus package. All while factories are closing their doors, and your employee's are being laid off. Boy, I hope he enjoy's all the extravagant and conspicuous material things he get with the money. Those laid off folks could use some of that too.
Remember 'back in the day' when you had to actually perform to recieve extracurricular compensation. Ahhhh.... memories.
The Associated Press: Harley-Davidson CEO gets $6.4M pay package in 2009
I'm reminded of what happens when different organisational disciplines win the political battle and have their "go" at running a manufacturing company. Finance guys being the worst, then Marketing folks, then Sales VP's. All three can be absolutely disastrous if not carefully monitored. Best to have an experienced, well balanced, "nothing to prove" type of individual at the helm, who maintains balance and generates common sense driven decision making. We're hawking motorcycles here boys, let's keep it simple.
We poke fun, and often seriously deride the folks who own Harleys, but to what end. "To each his own" say many, and maybe I agree... with reservations.
The whole HD concept seems to be totally wrapped around "lifestyle" accessory collecting, and pub crawling disquised as "Poker Runs".
Who cares? No one ever accused HD riders of being technical, or of having superb riding skills, and I don't believe they care either. It's about short rides, being seen, and seeing others. Period. That said, I'm sure there are some great HD riders, and some great HD highly modified, improved performance rides. I speak here of what we all see daily, and the majority.
Other folks veer toward sportbikes, some towards the ultimate touring / long range high-end offers, others towards classicly styled bikes, more and more are attracted to scoots, and finally the exotic crowd. To each his own indeed. Trouble brews, and folks get seriously twisted when one facet decides theirs is the only one.
Back to Harley and the Korean question: Could this guy just be "tootin'" his own horn in claiming "selected" HD Dealers are going to be carrying his product? Seems to be that Hogs and "rice burners" are at polar opposites, so this doesn't come off as a good marriage. I'd suggest someone group a handful of some exotics - Ural, Royal Enfield, and so on, then add this Korean offer, to assemble a possibly unique dealership concept.
The distinct crowd that HD attracts wouldn't be caught dead on an Asian bike such as this, and visa versa, so what is the advantage in showroom sharing?
Ride Safe!
