Sidecar,
I couldn't agree more on the aftermarket cold weather gear... or any gear for that matter.
Tons of great cold riding stuff to be found for reasonable prices at sporting goods stores, hunting outlets, even good ol' Walmart. Money saved can be spent on the bike, or on the trip, or whatever.
I too try to ride year round. There is an eerie silence and unique atmosphere in the cold, what with the blaring white of the snow, leafless trees, highlighted pines and evergreens, frozen rivers and lakes, etc. Just as long as you don't push the safety limits, and make sure the streets and roads are plowed, it's a good ride (what ride isn't?). It rotates the lubricants (in the bike!) and charges up the battery (in the bike AND you) as well. Snowmobile clothing is great for these rides, just remember to "go" first!
I do wear a full face helmet for the obvious safety reason, but also to block the cold winds, etc., and I also wear a jacket with shoulder, back and elbow protection. Just layer underneath, and a 4-6 hour ride in sub 40F weather is very do-able. A balclava hat is great under the helmet - toasty warm!
Great post.
