Re: Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas to you too!

Despite everything thats been going on lately I seem to really have the Christmas spirit this year, the wife doesn't know what to make of it as I'm usually not into it.

Re: Merry Christmas!

And a very Merry Christmas to all from the frozen Northland. We have had my grandson over for the week, but unfortunately we're sort of cabin-locked, as the temps have been in the minus 4 and 5 's, and it's been snowing very heavily the past few days.

We did go out for lunch yesterday, and to Borders Bookstore, then home to shovel snow for the fourth time in two days! Coloring book skills are coming back to us (stay in the lines!), we do have a decent DVD library of all the classic childrens movies, and fortunately the little guy likes to help make cookies and stuff.

All our kids and their families are coming over at three this afternoon, so we're looking forward to a fun day... could be a "sleep-over" if the snow doesn't tail off.

Anyway, Christmas Spirit is alive and well here, despite the continual onslaught of negativity in the media. We'll get through it as a family, as well as a nation, we always do!

Merry Christmas, and a very happy and healthy new year to all!

Re: Merry Christmas!

We were whacked hard by two winter storms over the last couple of weeks in New Hampshire. Many of our neighbors went without power for nearly two weeks.

Certainly makes me appreciate all that I have, and considerate of those that don't, because of acts of Mother Nature.

None the less, Santa still rides tonight on the town 'hook and ladder' fire truck with sirens and lights. We're warm and smiling with the Christmas Spirit and wish all of you the very best and a prosperous New Year.

Show a little sprit to your motorcycle and be sure to pamper it during the winter months!

Re: Merry Christmas!

Thanks King, glad to hear you survived the Weather and power outages. We heard about your plight up there nightly on the news. Good ol' ComEd caught tipsy at the tiller?

All joking aside, hope the folks up there all do well, you New Hampshire folks come from tough stock, so no worries.

Re: Bike pampering - I got a Tourmaster "Rincon" jacket for Christmas from the kids, and it's great. Looks sort of like the Belstaff Trialmaster of old, but with modern materials, etc. Lots of pockets, including secret inside pockets. Shoulder, elbow and back armor. Zip-out liner. Waist belt. Super excellent quality.

It's for late winter, early spring, and fall type of riding, Super warm - I tested it shoveling snow yesterday, under the guise of protection from falls should I slip!

One tip should anyone be interested - the sizes MAY run a little small. Mine is an XL. I'm 5'-9", 210 lbs. I'm big (wide) in the shoulders. It's tight, but O.K. as you probably wouldn't need a bulky sweater to keep warm in this thing. All that said, an XXL probably wouldn't be too bad. Personally, I like tight, non-flapping clothes while riding, lightweight, and with lot's of freedom of movement.

What did you get for the bike?

Merry Christmas guys! Let's see more posts!!

Re: Merry Christmas!

Bike didn't get anything for Christmas. I'm thinking new helmet may be next on the list.

Re: Merry Christmas!

I got a couple items:
  • OGIO backpack with hydration bladder and tube.
  • Gift Card for my local Honda Dealer, with a REPSOL Honda in racing pictured on the front. It is quite impressive, I should scan and post it online.
The family knew that I'm planning to get a new helmet, but may use the gift card for new tires.

Re: Merry Christmas!

Thanks Prophet for the kind words.

As for gifts for the Thruxton....my daughter was the only one to come through with two packages of 'shop rags'. I was more than appreciative and so was my wife as over the years I have become sort of a towel thief. Let's just say that not all towels that I have used before haven't been quite ready to be used for shop rags...and she has let me know this....LOL!!

I am making the final selection on tires...I have settled on a pair of Avon AM26 Roadriders. I'll pull the wheels off myself and deliver to install the tires on the rims.

Jackets...the Rincon is a sweet one..I like the looks...and have thought about it myself. I have a couple of jackets and the jacket I think looks the best is an old leather 'bomber' style that I have but I can't stand riding with it as it is too...baggy?? (lack of better word). At speed...the wind blows me around too much...I have found that a nice tight jacket seems to slip through the winds better.....but these jackets seem to be tight in the shoulder/sleeve area and cuffs run high when holding handlebars. The perfect jacket is indeed a science. I am open for more suggestions.

Re: Merry Christmas!

King - I know what you mean about "shop rags", I've been in trouble myself many times. Also, very nice thoughtful gift, as it's not one of those things you usually buy yourself.

As far as Jackets go... wow, that's a very personal and subjective choice if there is any, but a few suggestions:

1.) Riding jackets are "shaped" somehow through the designed tailoring to match the shape of the forward hunched shoulders, and forward / bent arms. Backlengths and tailoring are also taken into account, so they don't ride up, or form "sails" from the wind. Regular civilian jackets I guess are ok for short jaunts, but for the long run, it's nice to have a purpose built riding jacket.

2.) You definitely get what you pay for. There are bargains to be had through special sales, close-outs, etc., but not many jackets I've seen for under say $150.00 are worth it. They turn out to be the most expensive, because you need to buy 2 or 3 in the same lifespan as one good one.

3.) Look for specific namebrands. Granted, some name brands exist solely to maintain a ridiculously high price, but there are others that translate as "quality". Others can chide in on these choices.

4.) The bigger the store, the more of a chance for a fair price. On one hand I'm the champion of the little guy, on the other hand, I can smell a rip-off a mile away. Mark-ups on jackets and other accessories are HUGE, so there is plenty of space for price reduction off of MSRP (Manufacturers Sniveling Ripoff Point).

5.) From a Safety perspective, look for approved shoulder, elbow and back armor, as well as a heavy duty road-rash saving durable material. Lot's of choices nowadays to compete with the old standard leather. Your choice.

6.) Sizing - What can I say? Each brand seems to have it's own idea of what say a "Large" is. Ask ahead of time about returns if it doesn't fit right. Being a professional cheapskate, I go to the Cycle World Motorcycle Show every year, try on all the vendors gear, find the right fit, and order on-line for a better price. Sorry vendors... lower your price!

I guess I'm becoming more preachy than helpful here, so I'll wind down...

Years ago I used to buy my jackets and stuff from the local Harley Dealer, way before Harleys became popular and the accessories expensive. Maybe now they are willing to bend a little?

Motorcycle Superstore, British Motorcycle Gear (BMG) are the two on-line stores I've used many times with zero complaints. Good prices, great service. I currently use a Belstaff Zodiac from BMG in the 60 to 100 degree riding season, and will now use the Tourmaster Rincon in the <60 degree days. I'm anti-leather to protest against, and differentiate between all the weekend cruiser pirates out there, but I'm naturally recalcitrant, so what can I say.

Hope this helps a little.
