King - I know what you mean about "shop rags", I've been in trouble myself many times. Also, very nice thoughtful gift, as it's not one of those things you usually buy yourself.
As far as Jackets go... wow, that's a very personal and subjective choice if there is any, but a few suggestions:
1.) Riding jackets are "shaped" somehow through the designed tailoring to match the shape of the forward hunched shoulders, and forward / bent arms. Backlengths and tailoring are also taken into account, so they don't ride up, or form "sails" from the wind. Regular civilian jackets I guess are ok for short jaunts, but for the long run, it's nice to have a purpose built riding jacket.
2.) You definitely get what you pay for. There are bargains to be had through special sales, close-outs, etc., but not many jackets I've seen for under say $150.00 are worth it. They turn out to be the most expensive, because you need to buy 2 or 3 in the same lifespan as one good one.
3.) Look for specific namebrands. Granted, some name brands exist solely to maintain a ridiculously high price, but there are others that translate as "quality". Others can chide in on these choices.
4.) The bigger the store, the more of a chance for a fair price. On one hand I'm the champion of the little guy, on the other hand, I can smell a rip-off a mile away. Mark-ups on jackets and other accessories are HUGE, so there is plenty of space for price reduction off of MSRP (Manufacturers Sniveling Ripoff Point).
5.) From a Safety perspective, look for approved shoulder, elbow and back armor, as well as a heavy duty road-rash saving durable material. Lot's of choices nowadays to compete with the old standard leather. Your choice.
6.) Sizing - What can I say? Each brand seems to have it's own idea of what say a "Large" is. Ask ahead of time about returns if it doesn't fit right. Being a professional cheapskate, I go to the Cycle World Motorcycle Show every year, try on all the vendors gear, find the right fit, and order on-line for a better price. Sorry vendors... lower your price!
I guess I'm becoming more preachy than helpful here, so I'll wind down...
Years ago I used to buy my jackets and stuff from the local Harley Dealer, way before Harleys became popular and the accessories expensive. Maybe now they are willing to bend a little?
Motorcycle Superstore, British Motorcycle Gear (BMG) are the two on-line stores I've used many times with zero complaints. Good prices, great service. I currently use a Belstaff Zodiac from BMG in the 60 to 100 degree riding season, and will now use the Tourmaster Rincon in the <60 degree days. I'm anti-leather to protest against, and differentiate between all the weekend cruiser pirates out there, but I'm naturally recalcitrant, so what can I say.
Hope this helps a little.
