Re: Ice coated everything

It's pretty and ugly at the same time. I talked to our hero on the phone the other day and he confirmed what I suspected...that it is like a 'war zone' down there.

I watched the storm develop and progress on the Weather Channel. It was huge. We got the tail end, about 7" of snow. Just south of us in northern Ohio, it snowed 11".

Hopefully you have or will have utility power and are keeping warm. I'm very happy I'm up here and not down there. That's not always the case, but, right now, it is.

Hey Everyone,

Let me first say AAAAAUUUUUGGGGGHHHHHH

Tuesday afternoon/evening was right out of one of those crisis-disaster movies where everything is coming down around you and people are fleeing for safety. For a few hours I was in the ice and water clearing branches, and running from others at the same time. By 6pm, my wife intervened and said it was time for us to evac.

At this moment, Saturday night, we still don't have power at my home. I've got with my family at the in-laws house, the cat is doing Ok sticking it out at home but the dog went with us. However, the fish (Nemo) froze to death.

I'm typing this from a Starbucks in Bentonville, AR; about five minutes from the Wal-Mart Home Office. There are a few wireless towers impacted, I can't get 3G wireless from the in-laws house.

We started getting estimates today for the tree clearing. I've got trees on my house and fence, cooperation from tree services aren't a problem. My electric company has their work cut out for them though. My insurance company isn't much better, but I know who the local adjusters are.

After we get the trees cleared we'll need a new roof on both house and storage building, as well as fence repair in the front yard.

The cars are Ok. I parked them away from the property before the chaos started. The bike is Ok as well, so things could be worse

Re: Ice coated everything

Today it warmed up to 60°. Spent the day cutting up the down trees and branches in my yard.

We were lucky as far as power we live on the border of two power company's and ours was up for the most part. Our next door neighbors and most of town just got power back yesterday. Went to borrow a chainsaw from my Father in law today they live in a town just north of us (Springdale) still without power and that town is just devastated.

They have utility workers from 5 states here and they aren't messing around.

Re: Ice coated everything

Just hang in there. It will get better. I know what it's like not to have power, that's why I have a standby genset. We went 5 days without during the blackout 8 years or so ago. I'll never do that again.

I have a Generac 17KW propane fired (or NG) emergency standby unit that automatically switches in, in the event of a power outage in 45 seconds and stays online until the power is restored and dosen't fluctuate for 1 minute, then it cycles out.

It was a very good investment both from the peace of mind aspect and from the aspect of having electricity, something you take for granted, until it's not there. We need electricity to pump water for the house as well as the barns, for the refrigerator and freezers, to cook with and to keep warm with. Furnaces don't work without electricity. www.generac.com if you want to take a gander at them. I bought mine through Norwal electric, out of Phoenix. www.norwall.com

Since I installed the genset, our power has only been interrupted 2 times and it's only been offline for about an hour. I guess you'd say the genset isn't worth it, but all it takes is one good long interruption and you are toast...as I'm sure you guys know.

Stay safe and keep warm and let the electric company employees do their jobs. I have a good friend that's down your way from Detroit Edison helping out.

Re: Ice coated everything

We have PLENTY of snow on the ground, but the latest forecast sez "mid-to-high 40's" coming this weekend.

Sunday is the Cycle Word International Motorcycle Show near O'Hare Airport, which my wife and I are attending (free tickets from my son, otherwise I wouldn't bother), so Saturday I'll be out. Seems like there are a lot of manufacturer "no-shows", but on the vendor list it looks like more aftermarket/accessory guys are tere than last year. Maybe its a yin/yang thing.

I DID see one guy out last Sunday, and it was around 10 degrees F. Looked like a Honda CBR, and he looked... cold. Good for him though!

The Groundhog saw it's shadow, so six more weeks guys. Won't be long.

Re: Ice coated everything

Be prepared to pay dearly for parking. The hallmark of those shows is a high price of admission and high priced parking along with insane food and drink prices inside.

I only go if I get exhibitors passes and I alway try to park away from the venue in a cheap lot. I also carry a can of pop in my pocket. Somehow, 5 bucks for a watered down over carbonated 8ounce Pepsi just don't trip my trigger.

This years show in Novi was basically a flea market. Lots of no-shows...and lots of junk.

Re: Ice coated everything

Thanks Sidecar.

You are right, parking IS a major rip, but at O'hare, they've got you coming and going.

+1 on food as well. We plan on a BIG breakfast, then some bottled water in the pocket, along with a few Power bars. Hot dogs on the steamer for 6 hours just isn't my favorite anymore.

My son gave us free passes, so we're good to go. Don't really need anything special this year, but I still feel it's a decent way to spend a winter Sunday.

Re: Ice coated everything

Well, my wife , my 2 sons and I went to the Chicago Cycle World Motorcycle Show yesterday (Sunday, 09 Feb). It was great.

1.) EVERYONE, except Triumph and Royal Enfield, was there. Yes, BMW, yes Kawasaki, yes to everyone else. Maybe things changed, but all the reports of no shows didn't happen yesterday in Chicago.

2.) It was absolutely packed. I expected that with the economy being what it is, not too many folks would be interested in looking. Wrong. It was packed solid, and with everyday folks, not just RUB's and bonus rich CEO's.

3.) I didn't notice any great deals, or price reductions on new Bikes. Looked pretty much the same as last year, with a COL increase of course.

4.) Harley Davidson was the most packed exhibit. Many people were just hanging around apparently showing allegience, but HD had a flood of Salesmen running around, pressing the flesh and answering questions, etc. Appeared to be tons of women trying out Harley's for size. Good for them, say I.
I sat for a while on a beautiful silver colored Road King Classic, and spoke to a nice, friendly Sales guy for about 20 minutes. Very nice experience.

5.) I'll say Harley tied Suzuki for the biggest, most lavish display.

6.) I'll admit, much more aftermarket vendors than the previous 4 or 5 years, but that's OK. On the negative side - a lot of low market, low value junk being offered. These are the "Made in Viet Nam" leather jackets for $39.99, the 50 cent sunglasses from China for $12.99, and so on. This cheapens the sport... someone should be pre-qualifying these guys. Also, too many aggressive style hawkers grabbing folks in the aisle and asking them to "fill out" survey forms to win a "free" bike. Folks are very nervous about giving out info these days. Too many scams.

7.) Victory makes some wierd looking (styled) bikes (I know, to each his own!). Me? I think it looks like a Harley as seen in a fun-house distorted mirror. Shame on me, as I AM an Art lover. Just had to say it, sorry. Many probably think my bike looks weird too.

8.) BMW's are looking more and more like futuristic pieces from a Transformer toy layout.

9.) There was a stand for "Cafe Racer Magazine" that looked very interesting. This is a new monthly magazine offer they are trying to get established. Unfortunately, they were asking for $4.00 each for magazine samples, with no takers. Should have been giving away copies. Ya wanna succeed... ya gotta take risks. Hope they survive, as it's good subject matter.

10.) Not too many vintage bikes as promised, too bad. A nice pristine 1959 Triumph though.

11.) Serious lack of "show-babes" and "models" this year. Being an amatuer pervert, I notice such things. Actually, last year my long-suffering wife let me have my picture taken standing proudly between two "babes" who were hawking some Energy Drink brand. A guy can dream... right? Bring 'em back say I.

12.) Japanese sport bikes are all starting to look exactly the same to me. Maybe it's old age.

13.) The Honda Goldwing is bizzare. Why not just buy a small car? OK, now I'm getting downright nasty.

14.) What is the percieved connection between motorcycle's... and Indians? Why are there tons of white and tan leather jackets with fringe, feathers, turquoise and stuff, for women, that look like indian maiden dresses? Where there motorcycles at the Little Big Horn. Sitting Bull on a Hyabusa? I missed something. Just kidding.

15.) Last, but not least - Folks were NICE. With big crowds, packed aisles, standing in line requirements, etc., it's easy for a crowd to turn sour. Kudo's to everyone there, and kudo's to the biking world, for being such mature and understanding folks. It's a real pleasure to be part of it.

I have a few pics, which I'll post over the next week. They're on my son's camera, need to download them into my computer.

Ride safe.
