Speed,

Great pics, looks like you guys had a really great time. I like that old stone building. What is it?

"Impassable Hairpin Turns Ahead" - a road sign every every rider longs to see.

Thanks for sharing.

Re: Arkriders pics

That building is the Newton County courthouse located on the town square in Jasper. Most old buildings and a lot of homes in the Ozarks are built from stone because we have lots of it. Jasper is a popular destination in Arkansas due to the abundance of FANTASTIC roads that surround it.

Re: Arkriders pics

Thanks Shaun, great info. I live near a very old, small town in Illinois, and sadly, they are ... well, were until the housing crap-out... tearing down a lot of these wonderful old buildings, and replacing them with generic "mini-mall" style buildings. No character, no history, no stories connected to these new McBuildings. Sad. Why does folks think we need yet another Nail Salon, and/or $4.00 a cup Coffee Shop every mile or so?

I admire the fact that you and your riding buddies are wearing gear and helmets, even though - to my knowledge - Arkansas has no mandatory helmet law for over 21's. This says something very positive and forward about the group. Kudo's to all! (not trying to start a "helmet" thread, so back slowly away from the keyboard non-helmet guys!).

We have a similar sized ride 'round here, and it's getting bigger every year, called the "Slimey Crud Run". This is held in early May, then again in October, to mark the beginning and end of the "official" riding season up north.

We ride from New Glarus to Leland Wisconsin. No set time or pace, just do as you will, and meandering off the main road is encouraged, but usually not intentional. The smart money is on the guys who book a room at Leland, as Beer a-drinkin' and story telling (truth optional) after dinner is somewhat mandatory(?)

Great fun, and also oddly more helmets and gear than not, despite no mandatory laws, as HD enthusiasts are present and always welcome, but for whatever reason very, very few show at this run. Much more sport bikes, and classics. Old Triumph's, BSA's, Nortons as well as new bikes. The iconic Peter Egan, columnist and author from Cycle World, usually makes it as well.

Anyway, again, very nice pics, and thanks for sharing the good times with us.

Re: Arkriders pics

I've read about the "Slimy crud" in Cycle World.

It was a great group to ride with, forty sportbikes riding at a spirited pace without a getoff on a very technical road. The only accident was a "Harley Chick" riding with a group of cruisers going the opposite direction. She took a corner to hot went off the road onto the shoulder and when she tried to re-enter the road lost control and highsided. Luckily she walked away, several of us stopped to offer help.

Arkansas has no helmet law, but many of our group are racers ex-racers and a few MSF instructors so they appreciate the value of a good lid.

Re: Arkriders pics

I was thinking about what I wrote concerning Helmets, and feel the need to explain further, also apologize for any misunderstandings beforehand...

I have no real feelings about helmets, wear 'em, or don't. Just don't preach or pontificate () either way, or make up baloney stories to strengthen your case. Either way.

The real point was that there ARE people that do not need to be legislated to death by the govenment, and can act professionally and responsibly without laws that force them to.

Imagine if...

There were no laws against drunken driving.
No laws against using drugs.
No speed limits.
No laws against public intoxication, etc.

A few more accidents like the one you explain will cause a 250CC learners limit. Why on earth would an inexperienced female buy a Harley Cruiser... nevermind, I think I just answered my own question.

And so on. It's always the tiny minority of irresponsible people that create the need for government legislation, that the rest of us complain about. Whew!!!

Back to topic - these group rides are great, and tons of fun, if held under control, and planned so as to not block traffic or cause incidents.

Lastly, our local RAT pack organizes Track Days at Blackhwawk Farms Raceway, and we get a decent group discount as well. These are great opportunities to "open it up" legally, and see what she can do, and also to check out the results of any modifications you may have done over the winter. Much more precise and realistic than a stationary "Dyno" graph sheet, and questionable bench racing. Loads of fun, you can really hone your riding skills and it is 'mildly' competitive. Safe as well, because we're all going in the same direction!
