Modified Spark Plugs

Here's a very good article with pics around side-gapping spark plugs. Worth a read, many folks claim that they experience minor performance gains, so it may have some merit. This mod has been around for a long time, nothing new, but sometimes old is good!

It's obviously very easy to do, and the cost is virtually nil. In these trying economic times, that may be good recipe.

Re: Modified Spark Plugs

Another extremely "oldie but goodie" might be to consider indexing the plug(s).

FORDMUSCLE.com web-magazine - How To Index Spark Plugs

Point is to eventually face the open area of the electrode/gap towards the intake valve, directly in line with the incoming charge.

Some say it works, and of course some say it doesn't. Your choice naturally.

Other heated debates arise around whether the open gap should face:
  • The Intake Valve
  • The Exhaust Valve
  • A central point between the above two.
  • Towards the narrowest portion of the "squish" band, as rising piston pressure will then push the charge from this "narrow" area to a lesser "squish" area.
The concept and idea sounds interesting, and logically makes a point to consider.

Is it worth a few minutes and a few bucks to gain perhaps 1% H.P.?

If added to another four such easy and seemingly (1%!) 'worthless' mods, that's "theoretically" 1 + 4 = 5% additional HP for practically zero investment (a bag of spacers), and very little time expended (Maybe 10 minutes?).

You be the judge!

Lightbulb Re: Modified Spark Plugs

A good read on Spark plugs in general, specifically NGK. More info than you need...

Verrill: Plug Color Chart

but good stuff nonetheless.
