Filter that oil...

We do not dictate or try to "force-feed" oil filter choices - or any choices for that matter - on this forum, but instead attempt to present objective style studies, and allow the intelligent folks who are our members draw their own conclusions.

Information is Power!!

That said, here are a few "Oil Filter" studies that appear to be highly objective for the most part. Yes, they are intended for cars, but the filtering and quality/performance concepts are the same for bikes. At any rate, interesting to see who's makin' what.

Make your own conclusion(s), or add objective comments or info please.

Motor Oil Analysis

How do you really know if you are changing the motor oil in your bike too often, or not often enough? How can you tell if the oil you're using is adequate? Is that oil filter you’ve carefully chosen doing it’s job?
You can get valuable information to help answer those questions with used motor oil analysis.
Oil analysis is sometimes available from heavy machinery dealerships or from any number of labratories that can be found on-line and to which you can mail a sample.
The company you use should be able to help you interpret the numerical results you recieve from your analysis. There are various tests that tell you different things:
  • Trace metals - indicates how an engine is internally wearing. Most helpful when repeated test are done.
  • Particulate - indicates how well the oil filter is performing
  • Fuel & glycol - can indicate a leaking head gasket or worn rings
  • TBN (Total Base Number) - indicates how well the additive package is holding up. Helps determine if the motor oil is being used for too long, or could be used longer.
  • Viscosity - indicates how well the oil is holding up. Helps determine if the motor oil is being used for too long, or could be used longer.
Oil analysis can seemingly be expensive. Is it worth it?, That's up to you. Once a year may be enough. Twice a year? Again, your choice.

A lab:

Another one in Texas

Google “Motor Oil Analysis” and you can get a lot more info, and a lab location maybe closer to you.

Ride safe!

Oil Filter Magnets!

There seem to be many types. Wrap around models, ones you drop inside the filter cartridge, and some that are electrified(!).

Here are a few for consideration:

Also, don't forget the old oil pan drain plug magnets.

Again, as always, your personal choice to use, agree with... or not. Seems that it can't hurt (one perspective), and the concept at least seems interesting.

Ride Safe (and without metal dust in your oil!)
