Crankcase Air Balance

I'm seriously looking at these :

Motorcycle KrankVents

Wow, there is a ton of contention out there in Cyberville over ventilation of Crankcases. Just on these "Krankvents" alone, the various website/Forum testimonials range from "The best thing I've ever done...", to "These things are worthless crap...". Hmmm...

Then again, these 180 degree, yin/yang "testimonials" are almost a regular thing on the internet misinformation highway now, so who do you believe?

I try to search around for a little while and find out the background / personality profile / technical expertise level / experience / flexibility / stubbornness, and so on of the various "testimonial" or "free advise" providers, and quickly negate those that are merely professional flamers, run of the mill 'know'-alls', or chronicly negative Internet Addicts.

In the end, the "Krankvent" makes some sense, and at roughly $75 bucks, is not a tragic investment. There are some very positive comments on the better managed Motorcycle Forums, and there is an actual Telephone Number on their website, and they also openly "encourage" people to telephone them, which IMHO is very unique these days.

On the stock Triumph Hinckley Bonneville for example, this would be a simple splice into the breather hose headed towards the Intake Filter Housing. It also negates the possibility of oil mist eventually getting onto things, as experienced from the common "Mini-Pod" filters as sold by K&N with the gazillion old "Airbox Eliminator" kits sold. For a "belt and Suspenders" approach, you could have one of these leading TO a mini pod style filter. Although the concept here seems to be allowing air (and not oil mist) OUT, but not IN, and by utilizing the pulsation factor of the engine crankcase, create a slight vacuum.

Anyone have any hands-on experience with these Krankvents, or objective comments? Unless I hear any horror stories, I think I'm gonna try one.

Ride Safe!

Re: Crankcase Air Balance

I did look at that device sometime ago and, like you, found all sorts of conflicting opinions. The most common one is that it's just a PCV valve like the ones that have been used on cars for years, only it looks a lot more sturdy.

At the moment I have removed the hose linking the engine to the airbox and just have a small filter mounted high up. No oil is leaking so far, and it saves the airbox from breathing hot engine fumes that are supposed to gum up the injection sensors and lower charge density.

This was a big problem in earlier bikes like the CB400F and CB550. Oil would foul-up the paper air filters in short order.
